Headteachers Message! -
Good Afternoon,
It has been lovely to see the sunshine this week — and what a busy fortnight it has been!
I’d like to start by congratulating the children in Key Stage 2 who took part in District Sports last week. They demonstrated our school values during the day and were a credit to the school and themselves. They enjoyed great success and we are very proud of them. A huge thank you to the staff and parents for their support and enthusiastic cheering at the event.
We were delighted to welcome new reception parents at our recent meeting and are thrilled with the success of our stay and play sessions, which have been a wonderful opportunity for children and parents to get to know each other. Welcome to the Ashley family.
Our Year 6 children spent time at Guildford Cathedral on Tuesday taking part in a leavers' service with other children from church schools in the Diocese. There were a variety of activities taking place around the grounds before the children and staff went into the cathedral for the service. This is such a memorable event and I enjoyed being with them for it. Thank you to Thomas and Lucy for reading the prayer so clearly, Finn, Ruby and Sophie for carrying the school standard and for Isabelle receiving the candle which will passed onto Year 5.
We saw our pupils looking particularly smart for their class photographs on Tuesday. Thank you for making sure your child came in looking their best—it was lovely to see such proud smiles and polished uniforms. Next week, the children can wear their PE kit as the hot weather is set to continue. Thank you for making sure they have water bottles, sun hats and are wearing sun screen.
Today we welcome Mr Harrison as our new sports coach. He is looking forward to working with the children in their PE lessons and developing each child’s passion for sport and a healthy lifestyle. With over a decade of experience in coaching, Mr Harrison brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our sports program. In addition to his extensive coaching background, Mr. Harrison has also served as a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). This experience has equipped him with the skills and compassion to support our children, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to participate and thrive. Outside of his professional life, Mr. Harrison is an avid cyclist. In fact, he even cycled to school today despite the heat!
Sports Days - Next week, we have our sports days and I hope that many of you are able to join us on these days:
Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) is on Thursday 9 - 12pm (includes time for a picnic)
EYFS is on Friday 9-10am
Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and Year 2) on Friday 10:15 - 12pm (includes time for a picnic). Your child needs to wear their house colour T-Shirt - if you are not sure which colour you need, please ask your child's classteacher.
Wishing the Year 5 and 6 cricket team all the best on Monday as they represent Ashley in the second stage of the tournament and the finals. Go Ashley!
Finally I would like to thank the SWIP (Sir William Perkin) volunteers who have spent the day at Ashley ‘Making a Difference’ and they truly have! Our sports equipment has been audited, sorted and tidied and the library has new books on the shelves. Thank you from everyone at Ashley.
All in all, it’s been a very busy — and brilliant — fortnight!
Mrs RatcliffREMINDERS -
HOT WEATHER - Please ensure your child has sun cream applied before school and that they bring their sun hat and water bottle. While the high temperatures remain children can wear a PE kit.
We are also allowing children to bring in small hand held fans, frozen flannel or small container of ice to help cool them down at school. We will be providing children with extra fruit and/or ice poles to keep them hydrated. We have also provided additional shade in the school field.
PUNCTUALITY- Frequent lateness can negatively affect your child’s mental health, learning ability, concentration and friendships. Children who frequently arrive late are at a significant disadvantage compared to those who arrive on time, every day. Children who arrive on time are able to settle quickly into class and apply themselves more successfully to their learning.
SICKNESS ABESENCE - Not every illness will require a child to stay away from school. During term time, your child should attend school regularly unless he or she is ill or the school has authorised their absence. If your child is too ill to come to school, you must let the school know before 8.30am on each day of absence. If you are unsure if you should keep your child home from school due to illness, please look at this useful website "Is my child too ill for school? Click here.
If you child will be absent due to illness. Please contact the school either by:
calling the office number: 01932 227695, selecting option 1 and leaving a message
Study Bugs App - Get the app or register now (https://studybugs.com/about/parents)
Please ensure that you state the nature of your child's illness (e.g. headache, vomiting, etc.) If you state that that they are under the weather or unwell, we will call you to clarify.
If your child will be absent for a prolonged period of time, the check-in and absence reporting frequency will be agreed by a member of Ashley's Senior Leadership Team and communicated via the School Administration Team.
All absence is recorded and monitored by the attendance team and a strict procedure is followed.

Inspire Her Festival -
During our time at Inspire Her, we have learned team-building skills while having fun! Inspire Her is a programme designed to encourage young girls to start playing and enjoying football, run by Chelsea FC. They organised a festival at Chelsea Women's training ground (Kingsmeadow Stadium) and, whilst we were there, we met Millie Bright (the Chelsea Women's captain). We played against many secondary teams and took part in dance and strengthening classes, amongst other fun activities. In school, the Inspire Her sessions are split into two sections which include engaging activities in the classroom and playing/learning new football skills! By Isla M, Lucy E & Carolina V
Happy Eid Al- Adha to our Muslim community -
On Friday 6th June Muslim's celebrated Eid to mark the end of Hajj, the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca.

Year 6 Leavers' Service Guildford Cathedral. On Tuesday, Year 6 attended their Leaver's Service at Guildford Cathedral along with other primary schools in the Trust. What a magnificent setting to reflect on their time at Primary School! Through different activities, the children explored their hopes, their achievements and their fears: they thanked people who had inspired or supported them throughout their journey. A huge thank you and well done to our standard bearers, candle holder and the children who said a prayer - you are a credit to Ashley School!

This half term in RE, Year 5 are learning about what religious and non-religious people believe about living a good life. Therefore, we were delighted when our very own Mrs Ali agreed to give the pupils a talk on her beliefs about living a good life from her perspective as a practising Muslim. As well as answering many though-provoking, spontaneous questions from the children, she also discussed her views on four key questions:
- How does living a good life now impact on your future?
- How do your beliefs impact on the way you look after the natural world?
- How is family life affected by your beliefs?
- Do you have a favourite quote that helps you to live your life?
We were so proud of the children who listened so respectfully, wrote notes and asked some wonderfully 'big questions' during the 45 minutes. Well done Year 5!

Y4 -
Year 4 have started their new D&T project with our golden thread being cooking and nutrition. We began our project by tasting some different breads to get a sense what flavours there were. We tasted Persian lavash bread, brioche, sourdough fruited bloomer, garlic and coriander naan and brown soda loaf. We thought about the aroma, texture, appearance and taste. After tasting, we ranked the breads from the one we liked the best, through to the one we liked the best. This was a brilliant start to the project as we are now looking forward to planning, designing and making our own bread!

On Friday Year 3 had a visit from Chertsey Museum for our topic on Roman Britain. The children enjoyed building temples, making gods and being archaeologists for the morning. They also learnt how to march like Roman soldiers.

Y1 -
This half term Year 1 are learning all about birds and how they live, as part of our learning theme "What can we learn from the Great Outdoors?". We investigated different types of nests that birds build to care for their eggs and chicks. The children then planned their own bird nests and we went outside to find natural materials and they worked together to follow their plans and build their own nests. We haven't had any eggs or chicks yet, but we will keep a look out just in case!

District Sports -
Our pupils did a fantastic job representing Ashley at this year’s District Sports. The competition was tough with 16 schools taking part, but we rose to the occasion. Every event had Ashley pupils giving their all, and it was great to see so many of them make it through to the finals. The hard work and progress we’ve seen in PE this year really shone through. It was a brilliant day all round, and once the scores were in, we were proud to finish 7th overall. A huge well done to everyone who took part, you did us proud!
