Ashley C of E Primary School

Ancient & Modern Foreign Languages

At Ashley we teach French in KS2

Learning a foreign language provides an opening to exploring other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. At Ashley, our teaching enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It also provideopportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes and learn new ways of thinking. Language teaching provides the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries. Language skills are also vital in improving understanding between people here and in the wider world, and in supporting global citizenship by breaking down barriers. Learning other languages gives us insight into the people, culture and traditions of other countries, and helps us to understand our own language and culture; these themes are woven throughout our wider curriculum.

At Ashley Primary School, all junior children from Year 3 to 6 have the opportunity to study French. Each child develops their communication skills in a new and exciting way. Children continually develop their understanding of the French language, as well as building a greater understanding of the similarities and differences to the English languagePupils are encouraged to share their experiences of other languages and culturesPupils work individually, in pairs, small groups and whole class according to the activity.  The learning follows the National Curriculum objectives and has been planned to consolidate and build on children’s knowledge of French each year. Progression will be tracked by the class teacher and each child will be stretched and challenged with their speaking and writing skills.  Areas covered include: greetings, family, animals, food and drink, weather, transport and many more!

The impact of teaching French at Ashley is very exciting! The children have shown great enthusiasm to learn about the cultures and language of another country. At Ashley, children are regularly exposed to new French terminology through many differentiated activities, such as, games, group activities, videos, songs and written language. Our children will progress onto secondary school having the confidencepatience, passion and resilience to continue to learn a new language. They will be equipped with the skills of understanding how to verbally pronounce and write in French.  Having developed this vital skill of learning another language, the children will also be set to explore our multicultural world through their understanding of how language works and their increased confidence for speaking a new language.
