Knowledge Organisers

What is a knowledge organiser?

At Ashley School, we are continuing our curriculum development. We are currently in the process of focusing on the content of our whole curriculum to ensure that there is a much greater emphasis on the ‘powerful knowledge’ that children need in order to truly understand concept. A Knowledge Organiser (KO) sets out in detail what we want children to know by heart by the end of each Learning Enquiry. We expect the majority of children to be able to recall all of the information on the KO by the end of each half-term.

This half-term we will be introducing 'Knowledge Organisers' to the children. These are the ‘go-to’ documents outlining the essential knowledge that the teachers will be covering in the key subjects in each Learning Enquiry, including dates, famous figures, vocabulary, definitions, and other useful information. Future Knowledge Organisers will be shared with pupils, parents and carers before Learning Enquiries are taught – with the aim that everyone knows exactly what is being taught, and what the children need to learn.

The use of the KOs will be developed over the coming academic year but as a guide, the children will take part in regular quizzes, that help stretch their long-term memory and develop their recall of key information as well as using them as supportive documents and learning prompts within lessons.

All of our Knowledge Organisers will be uploaded into the ‘Curriculum’ section of the school website and emailed to parents and carers before the term in which they are to be used so that they can be accessed to help support with homework. We ask that parents and carers read through these Knowledge Organisers at home with their children. It is also useful for children to go back to previous Knowledge Organisers and revise these so that the information from previous learning is not forgotten.

If you have any questions, please speak to Mr Crinall at the end of the school day, or email
