Art & Design


At Ashley, we aim to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, allowing them to experiment and create their own works of art, craft and design and express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas. We provide children with opportunities to develop and extend their skills as well as use a range of materials and tools. Children explore art and design from different cultures and history, learning to analyse and appreciate the work of great artists. We use sketchbooks to collect ideas and record experiences in order to develop and master techniques.  


The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at Ashley Primary School is based on the National Curriculum and EYFS objectivesIt is taught as an integral part of our half termly learning enquiries, through the following subject areas; drawing, printmaking, sculpturepainting, collage, textiles, and digital art. An ongoing sketchbook underpins the development of skills and techniques and is used to share ideas, experiences and reflections. There is a focus each half term on a different artist, craft maker or designer. Children study artists from a range of cultures, backgrounds and from different periods in history,  

In EYFS safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. They use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways to represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings.  

In KS1 children use a range of materials creatively to design and make products. They develop techniques using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and shape. They describe the differences between and range of artists and make links to their own work. 

In KS2, children develop their techniques including their control and use of a wider range of materials. They use sketchbooks to record observations and review and revisit ideas.  


Children will leave Ashley as creative, imaginative individuals who have developed a love and appreciation of art. They will have a web of knowledge of great artists and craft makers of the world and will have embedded the key art and design skills needed to allow them to produce inventive pieces of art. Children will have developed the confidence to express themselves in new ways, cooperate with others in shared projects and understood how art can be used to bring people together and improve their mental well-being.
