Spring Term 1 Topic: Sharing stories
Our topic web: An overview of our learning this half term
Squirrel and Hedgehog class have really enjoyed the story of Peter & the Wolf. We were particularly interested in learning how each character has a musical instrument and a piece of music especially for them. We listened to the story, the music and watched a film of it. Sometimes we still play the music in our listening area in our classroom!
We decided that we needed more music in our outdoor classroom and as a result have designed and made a brand new ‘Music Zone’! Here we can sing and play lots of different types of instruments.
We were very lucky to have lots of musicians come in to visit us and to teach us about their instruments. Mr Atkinson brought in his drum, Mrs Schaefer brought in her violin, Mr Atterbury brought in his clarinet, Mrs Shore brought in her cello and Mr and Mrs Cowden brought in one keyboard and one voice! We really enjoyed listening to Mrs Cowden sing and she even got a standing ovation from us!
Autumn 2 Topic 2011 – People who help us in our community!
Our exciting topic involved meeting different members of the community who help us. We had a visit from the local Ashley dentist, a policeman popped in, we had a visit from members of St. John Ambulance and we visited Walton Fire Station! We really enjoyed learning about the emergency services.
Abi, in Hedgehog Class, her Nanny and Grandad work for St. John Ambulance. They taught us how to use bandages and we demonstrated this new skill on our teddy bears. We also learnt what to do in an emergency and we saw Mrs Rich being put into a splint with a pretend broken leg!
Daniel was put in a splint!
To end our topic, Reception were learning about Fire Officers and their important role to save lives in the community. We even had a fire station role-play in the classroom. Reception walked all the way to the Walton Fire Station. We met our local Fire Officers and we were given a tour of the station. Everyone had a go at squirting water at a very tall building with the fireman’s hose. We also climbed into the fire engine. Did you know that fire stations no longer have a fire pole due to health and safety?!
Jazmine enjoyed getting everyone wet!

Pond Dipping at Esher Common
The Reception children had great fun exploring the mini-beasts in the pond. Amongst others we found water boatmen, tadpoles and pond skaters. The children explored their habitats and learnt how to be sensible and caring towards the creatures and where they live. Hedgehog Class were very excited to find a millipede, whilst Squirrel Class enjoyed watching the frog and dragonfly that they found.
We are very excited and are busy preparing for our move to the new classrooms next week! Watch this space for more news!
Spring Term News
In Hedgehog and Squirrel Class, we have been learning about growing and changing. To start the topic the children have learnt about how their bodies grow and are now focusing on plants.
The children have independently created their own garden centre and vegetable patch role-play areas in their classrooms. They have also started planting their own seeds.
The children have been exploring the outside area, looking for plants and flowers. During their search they stumbled upon a frog!! The frog misses the school pond!
We are looking forward to learning more about animals as the term progresses.
